VMware – Determine Virtual Machine Snapshot Consolidation Needed
The process of snapshot Deletion or Deletion All using Snapshot Manger will consolidate the snapshot files and merge to the existing snapshot file or virtual machine parent disk. Any failure to this task will leave the old snapshot file in the datastore causing storage usage and in some cases the virtual machine cannot be Shutdown/Powered-ON.
In a VMware Infrastructure, we can verify the status of all or a selected virtual machine that needs snapshot consolidation. The procedures are follows,
-
Select ESX/VCenter/Cluster, Navigate to virtual machine Tab, list all the virtual machines. Search box can be used to select a desire virtual machine.
-
Right click the menu and Select “Needs Consolidation“
-
In our case, the selected virtual Need Consolidation status shows “No“, that mean consolidation not needed.
-
If the Need Consolidation status shows “Yes“, Right click the virtual machine, select snapshot and select Consolidate.
